AC Not Cooling? 8 Common Causes and What to Do
Your AC is running but your home is not cooling down. Before you call for service, check these 8 common causes — some you can fix yourself in minutes.
It's a warm Snohomish County summer day and your AC is running — but your house just isn't cooling down. Before you panic, there are several common causes worth checking. Some are simple DIY fixes; others require a professional.
Here are the 8 most common reasons an AC runs but doesn't cool effectively.
1. Dirty or Clogged Air Filter
This is the most common cause of poor AC performance — and the easiest to fix. A clogged filter restricts airflow, which reduces cooling capacity and can cause the evaporator coil to freeze.
Check your filter first. If it's gray and clogged, replace it and give the system 30 minutes to recover before evaluating performance.
2. Frozen Evaporator Coil
If airflow is restricted (often from a dirty filter), the evaporator coil can ice over. When this happens, the AC blows air but can't transfer heat effectively.
Signs of a frozen coil: ice visible on the refrigerant lines, reduced airflow from vents, or water pooling around the indoor unit.
What to do: Turn the system to "fan only" mode (not cooling) for 2–3 hours to let the coil thaw. Then replace the filter and restart. If it freezes again, call a technician — there may be a refrigerant or airflow issue.
3. Low Refrigerant
Refrigerant is the substance that actually transfers heat out of your home. If your system has a refrigerant leak, cooling capacity drops significantly.
Signs of low refrigerant: the system runs constantly but can't reach the set temperature, ice on the refrigerant lines, or a hissing/bubbling sound near the outdoor unit.
Refrigerant issues require a licensed technician — it's not a DIY fix.
4. Dirty Condenser Coils
The outdoor unit (condenser) releases heat from your home to the outside. If the condenser coils are coated in dirt, grass clippings, or debris, heat transfer is impaired.
You can gently rinse the outdoor unit with a garden hose (from the inside out) to remove debris. Make sure the power is off first.
5. Thermostat Issues
Before assuming the worst, check your thermostat:
- Is it set to "cool" (not "heat" or "fan only")?
- Is the set temperature lower than the current room temperature?
- Are the batteries fresh?
- Is it located near a heat source (sunny window, lamp) that might give it a false reading?
A thermostat that's reading the temperature incorrectly will cause the system to behave erratically.
6. Tripped Circuit Breaker
Air conditioners draw a lot of power. If the circuit breaker for your AC has tripped, the outdoor unit may shut off while the indoor fan continues to run — blowing uncooled air.
Check your electrical panel. If the AC breaker has tripped, reset it once. If it trips again, call an electrician or HVAC technician — there's likely an underlying electrical issue.
7. Undersized System
If your AC has always struggled to cool your home on hot days, it may simply be undersized for your space. This is especially common in homes where rooms have been added or the system was never properly sized.
An HVAC technician can perform a load calculation to determine whether your system is appropriately sized.
8. Aging Equipment
Air conditioners lose efficiency as they age. A 15-year-old system may only be operating at 60–70% of its original capacity, even if it's technically "working." If your system is older and struggling, it may be time to evaluate replacement.
When to Call a Professional
If you've checked the filter, thermostat, and breaker and the system is still not cooling, it's time to call a technician. Issues like refrigerant leaks, frozen coils, and failing compressors require professional diagnosis and repair.
