A Snohomish homeowner had converted their detached two-car garage into a woodworking shop. The space was unheated and unusable in winter and sweltering in summer. They wanted a year-round solution without the cost and disruption of running ductwork from the main house.
The Challenge
The garage was fully detached with no existing HVAC infrastructure. Running ductwork from the main house would have required trenching and significant construction work. The homeowner wanted a clean, minimally invasive solution that could be installed quickly.
Our Solution
A single-zone ductless mini-split was the perfect fit. We installed a 12,000 BTU (1-ton) wall-mounted unit — sized appropriately for the 400 sq ft workshop. The refrigerant line runs through a 3-inch penetration in the wall to the outdoor compressor unit. No ductwork, no major construction. The unit provides both heating and cooling and qualifies as a heat pump for Washington State rebate purposes.
The Result
Installation was completed in under four hours. The homeowner now has a comfortable, year-round workspace. The mini-split runs quietly and efficiently — the workshop stays warm in winter and cool during summer woodworking sessions. The homeowner also received a utility rebate that offset a portion of the installation cost.
